Adoption and the Schools

This workshop is for both Parents and Teachers.  The IAC Center recommends that parents invite their children's teachers to facilitate working together to support the children with adoption issues.  This workshop will give you a great start to the 2005-2006 school year.

Session I

Time: 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Parents and Teachers Working Together

Moderator:  Joni S. Mantell, LCSW

A panel including a school guidance counselor, a teacher, a psychologist and a lawyer will discuss the kinds of problems that adopted children might experience in school and how everyone can work together in the best interests of the adopted child.  The panel will also use role play to demonstrate potentially difficult situations and proactive solutions

 

Session II

Time:  10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Adoption and the Schools

Speaker:  Joni S. Mantell, LCSW a specialist in adoption issues will discuss the emotional

              and psychological aspects.

Speaker:  Adam Pertman, Executive Director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, and author of "The

              Adoption Nation: How Adoption is Transforming America", will discuss the

              cultural and social aspects.

The speakers will discuss common issues adopted children experience during the school years, some specific school assignments, and how parents and teachers can work together to become more adoption sensitive and able to develop practical solutions together.  

 


Seating is limited. Pre-registration is required and should be completed at least one week prior to the event. Payment must be received in order to confirm your registration. Cancellations must be received at least three days prior to the event.
