International Adoption Workshop:  Transitioning and Adjusting Children at Home

This workshop is for you if you are a pre-adoptive parent, an adoptive or an adoption professional. Some adoption agencies will accept this workshop as partial fulfillment of your home study requirements (certificates will be issued).
Moderator: Jane Cramer, MSW, IAC Center Counselor with extensive experience in international adoption.

Speaker: Amy Lynch MS, OTR/L, Occupational Therapist at the International Adoption Health Program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

The stages of adjustment that children typically go through when arriving home with their adoptive families; strategies to ease the initial transition and ongoing adjustment of children adopted internationally and related parenting strategies with be presented. While the focus will be on the development and emotions of the child, some ways in which parents can simultaneously learn to manage their own energy and emotions will also be identified.

You will learn about:

• Parenting strategies uniquely designed for children who have had foster and/or orphanage care.
  
• Specific strategies for dealing with sleep, eating, attachment, habits and behaviors
  
• Sensory Integration and how it may apply to your Internationally Adopted Child
  
• Eye Contact, Social Skills, and Social Referencing
• Challenges for IA Children & what you can do athome/school
  
• Signs that indicate specialized services are needed

Identification of support systems and other ways for international adoptive parents to take care of them selves will be addressed.
